Welcome to my Supergirl fanpage!! This character is just the coolest thing to ever exist with her complex lore and strong storylines. I am primarily a Kara Zor-El girlie and am obsessed with Kara as Super and Powergirl. But, all ladies with the 'S' to take the title are cool as hell!
In summary, Kara Zor-El is Kal-El's cousin who escaped the explosion Krypton- typically as a tween- and thus actually remembers the planet. Plenty of her backstories have her suspended in the void and kept from aging until she reaches Earth, or growing up on the remenant city Argo, and that's why Supes is older than her despite her literally changing her diapers. I prefer space odysessy backstories but whatever if I wanted to read good comics I'd head over to image or Boom!. This is the Supergirl we see in her first appearence and the famous TV show.
Powergirl is a Kara from another, collapsed reality who escaped into a new one. Two mass extinction events and counting! Love that for her.
Mae Kent is a photomatic shapeshifter who had a toxic relationship with Lex Luthor in the 90's and perhaps the best Supergirl costume. Skirt + big hair is just so superior. During Peter David's famous run, she merges with a human girl named Linda Danvers to become the earth born angel of fire. She gets epic wings of fire and a DID coded lesbian situationship! Linda serves as Supergirl on her own after Mae gets split from her, and marries Clark to have Ariella Kent's Supergirl.
Then we also have Cir-El/Mia Kent, a future daughter of Lois and Clark. While I like her design, I have not liked a comic I've read with her in it so far. I will learn to love her too... eventually.
Other ladies to bare the mantle are Lara Lane-Kent, Zala Jor-El, Kara In-Ze, Lesla-Larr and Lana Lang. Which is still not an all inclusive list!
What attracts me to Kara specifically is the premise of getting up after the murder. That the absolute worst thing can happen, and you can be cursed to survive it, and you can still have a fulfilling life after the fallout. She spends so much of her time in comics as a confused, grieving, and often bitter young woman who still chooses to find meaning in all aspects of life. Additionally, Kara and the Supergirl mantle serves such an important place in comics as American folklore! She's essentially second fiddle to what Wonder Woman means for feminism, empowerment, and how women are depicted in storytelling. She's also been crowned A03's biggest lesbian (thank you CW!)
For most people, the story of their lives starts with their birth. Or, perhaps their conception, maybe the first contact between their parents. Kara Zor-El has never been that lucky. Her story starts - and has always started - in an escape pod. There is no other version of this story. Her mother, whose final kiss on her cheek continues to burn, is dust. Her father, her city, her world. everyone she’s ever known or was ever going to meet. It’s all gone. Rendered back into the atoms whence they came.
